dry, winter lips? make lip balm!

Have you read the ingredients in your favorite lip balm? There might be scary stuff in there, so check it out at ewg.org to find out how REAL your favorite brand is.

  • Lanolin actually dries out your skin and is addictive

  • Petrolatum is a byproduct of petroleum - yes, gasoline, like for your car

  • Paraffin wax is made from petroleum - see above

Lip balm is easy to prepare once you have the ingredients. You can mix and match your favorite base oils and scents. Pick what you love! You can use oils like Lavender, Citrus Fresh, Spearmint, Wintergreen or make some fun blends like Orange/Clove, Lemongrass/Mint, Lavender/Lemon.  Go crazy!

2 T cocoa butter* 1/4 c. avocado oil

10 drops vitamin E oil (we like Trader Joe's)

Melt wax, avocado oil and cocoa butter in a double boiler. Remove from heat, add vitamin E and peppermint and pour into 12-15 lip balm tubes* or small tins*.

2 T coconut oil

2 T beeswax*

Gently melt the cocoa butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax in a double boiler (or in a glass bowl set on top of a sauce pot of simmering water).

Remove from heat and then stir in the peppermint essential oil. Quickly pour the melted oil into 12 lip balm tubes*.
