essential oils 101

how to use essential oils**

Aromatically

Aroma inhaled through the nose reaches the olfactory bulb in 20 seconds to send messages to the limbic part of the brain, which activates memories and emotions. This is why oils are such a great option for those for those needing emotional support and support for their nervous system. The easiest way to activate this process is by diffusing essential oils.

Topically

When you apply anything to the skin (healthy or otherwise), it can be found in the blood within two minutes, and every cell in the body within 22 minutes. Essential oils and beauty care products infused with oils can be used to support not just the skin, but the while body.

To take it one step further, you can apply EO’s to the VitaFlex points on the feet and hands. You may have heard of reflexology. You can use that same concept in applying oils to the feet.

Don't forget to Dilute!  Pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted. Some oils are considered gentle and generally safe to apply directly to the skin, like Lavender and Copaiba. Other oils are considered “hot” and should be diluted before they are applied to skin, like Cinnamon Bark and Oregano.

Internally*

Not all essential oils can be ingested internally!  Young Living’s Vitality line is GRAS - recognized by the FDA as "generally regarded as safe." Use these by adding them to water/beverages, and/or using them to flavor food.

*Please note: This method can be considered controversial so it is important to do your research and decide for yourself if it is right for you. Ingestion by children under 6 is generally not recommended as oils can be too potent for their little bodies.

are essential oils safe for kiddos?

Some oils are safe for kids and some are not.

To make it easy for you, Young Living created essential oil blends and essential oil-infused products specifically for kids and babies.

Before using Young Living products with your little ones, carefully review the individual product label for full information on appropriate age usage and any cautions. Each child is different, so it’s always a good idea to test a small amount to make sure no irritation occurs before applying to a large area of skin. The same goes when diffusing essential oils around babies. Be sure to test them first!

You should also be generous when it comes to dilution and remember to use less than you would for an adult. Some of our favorite essential oils for babies are Grapefruit, Lavender, and German Chamomile.

what about during pregnancy?

Just like with babies, some essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy and some are not. The aroma of certain essential oils has actually been known to help with pregnancy nausea, like Grapefruit, Peppermint, and Lavender.

There are others we recommend that pregnant women stay away from, like Clary Sage, Tansy, Hyssop, Fennel, Wintergreen, and Sage, as well as any blends or supplements that contain these oils.

We ALWAYS recommend that pregnant women consult with a trained health professional with experience using essential oils.

what's the big deal about "fragrance"?

Most commercial products contain fragrances, which are contaminated with other chemicals. (If you REALLY want to know what "fragrance" can be... watch this video.) This is why individuals can have reactions to “scents” like runny nose, headaches, sneezing, rashes, etc.

Pure essential oils, like those Young Living offers, are 100% pure therapeutic grade, so the chances of a similar reaction are rare. This is why it is imperitive to do your research and ONLY buy essential oils from a company that makes oils "for a purpose, not a profit," like Young Living.

Did you know that the FDA has no labeling regulations so any manufacturer can use words like "100% Pure", "Thereaputic Grade Essential Oil" and the like? And as long as there's SOME unadulterated oil in the bottle, they're not technically lying because they can claim "100% Pure" is only referring to the 1% of oil in the bottle.  The other 99% in the bottle can be anything they want, like petroleum by-products or residual solvents.  And they expect YOU to know what they mean.

grades of essential oils

D. Commercial Grade - for industrial/commercial skin care use.

C. Perfume grade - for scent, synthetic (lowest grade) Most widly available.

B. Food grade - for flavoring (middle grade)

A. Therapeutic Grade - for therapeutic use on every cell in the body.  This is the top grade.  Only 1-2% of oils on the market fall in this category and why store bought doesn’t make the cut. Remember: you get what you pay for!
